Well…March has arrived. I put a question mark after it due to the extreme cold weather that we are experiencing with the arrival of March. I thought the groundhog didn’t see his shadow? What happened to the early Spring? For the record, it’s not unheard of to have a cold start to March. But it seems like this winter (at least in the Midwest) has dragged on and on.

The layout room is 80%ready. I am still waiting on carpet installation. I had to replace the carpet when the walls were rebuilt. When we removed the plaster, and installed drywall; the room literally lost about 2″ thickness in the walls. We added insulation and removed the older insulation that was water damaged from some roof damage due to storms in 2011. As usual, the paralysis-by-analysis conundrum has hit me again. I am stuck with the idea of using more of the room than planned. That’s the model railroader in me talking. I know that I need to focus on two scenes and keep the layout confined to that perspective. However, I always want to do more. Stay tuned to this thought.

I will post the layout designs up later this week. I’ve been working on them, but I’ve also been busy cleaning drywall dust. That stuff is everywhere! In the meantime, I’m busy re-designing parts of my shop. I am moving the computer desk and terminal out in the layout room in dormer number 1. This was the former site of helix number 1. But, I would rather use the space for a mini office this time around. The shop will be a multi-faceted repair/building place. I’ve had “stations” set up for years. But I am going to get my styrene organized; as well as my detail parts and extra parts. I have a couple of rolling cabinets that are going to the layout room for a tool chest. I plan to use them for storage of bigger tools; wire strippers; etc.,

I have a couple of projects in mind as the seasons turn (hopefully). I am doing another re-motor experiment in the next group of GP15-1’s. I’ll post more on this later. If successful, I’ll have a very unique setup with a superb motor and ESU loksound. Speaking of ESU, I am eager to hear more about the upcoming version 5 decoders. From what has been described; they are going to be superb in all aspects. I plan on pairing a couple of these with Zimo dual speakers and when the new 5.0 files are available, I should have the best setup available right now in HO scale onboard sound. So, bring ’em on.

The Boeing Train show is setup on my birthday this year. So, I might attend. I have missed these shows for the last couple of years due to lack of interest and health issues. With my health better than its’ been in several years now, I am more energetic and plan to visit more shows in the near future. There are some new things coming out this year, but I always enjoyed looking at shows for those things that can’t be bought anymore…and it’s always nice to get out and enjoy some sunshine; even if it’s 25 degrees!

A note to the dedicated spammers that are trying to get their x-rated crap on my site: Give it up. I monitor this site regularly and will not allow this type of stuff to get anywhere close to getting through.

I am a Southern Illinois Native. I am a fan of nostalgia, and the history of Southern Illinois. Model Railroading has been a large part of my life; and it helps serve that interest. Through this interest I have learned much about the region; the people; and the industries that gave us all hope of building a life beyond our formal education. Small Towns in the Midwest built this nation...and this site aims to share that fact with the world.
